ThE ERA OF 心之官则思

Which organ is for thinking?

Let us ask the question to an acient Chinese wise man.

How could he tell?

Apparently, he had not much knowledge of the human body. And more importantly, he was lacking in the techniques that could help him explore the fact.

But the question was so appealing, he could not resist to answer.

So he decided to use his perceptions as an experimental tool.

How would I feel if I be sad?
The heart aches (伤心).

How would I feel if I be angry?
The face is heated.
And heart rate is elevated.
A twisted gas is trying to outburst from the heart (生气).

......

After these thought experiment, he claimed:

心之官则思: thinking dwells in the heart.

And people developed theories on these observation. Complicated, sophisticated theories about the body, which later became the essence of Chinese Medicine.

They were quite convincing. Because 1) they seemed complicated. And complication usually means smart; 2) you could link some of your perceptions to the theories.

We are no wiser than the ancient wise man. And we still try to answer a lot of questions about the mind. (We just cannot resist)

Using behavioral experiments, anatomy, CT, EEG, fMRI, TMS,...Alas, we are still too far from the truth.

We have indeed developed a lot of theories. But we need be cautious about them. Until new tech appears, all theroies would make some sense.
